An explanation was given, though Cicero could not sense whether Meldresi was upset for his question and interruption or not. He did not really care if anyone thought poorly of him for his opinion and thoughts, or if they thought his question misplaced or mistimed. It needed to be asked, and everyone knew that. And so Cicero had stepped forward. He was not entirely satisfied, for it was evident from this meeting alone that Meldresi was their leader — and so why wait with dubbing her such? — but resigned to her answer with a nod.

Damien was called forth after Akela had been crowned Beta, first to be initiated and welcomed into adulthood by Meldresi. Cicero arched his neck to lick the side of Damien's face encouragingly, waiting for his brother to step forward and proceed with the ceremony.
