She was sick. To be sick so soon after giving birth frightened her to no end. Her children were close to be weaned, and she did it as soon as she could, regurgitating meat as much as she could without disrupting her children's stomachs. She did not want them to catch whatever it was that was ailing her.

It was a sickness of the blood. And not just any blood sickness, either. She had treated a woman with this ailment before, she had tried to save her, desperately, but to no avail. The high priests and priestesses had told her that there was no cure for this sickness, that all she could do was aid her transition from this world into the Void. And that was all she could do for herself. That frightened her.

What terrified her even more was how Burke would respond, as she called for him softly, her voice noticeably weaker. She curled around her children, who were sleeping unaware of their mother's dilemma.

She wondered if they would even remember her.
