Things had gone to shit and beyond within a matter of days. Behati avoided the Plateau for fear of running into Casmir, laying claim to the fields between home and Ravensblood Forest. She slept and hunted there, curling up beneath the open sky at night and praying that it wouldn't rain.

It was pitch black that night, and eerily quiet. Behati had created a little bed for herself in a patch of faded grass, patting the stalks down to form a wolf-sized circle that she squeezed herself into, paws and tail tucked close to her body. It was freezing, and she was beginning to wonder if this was too high a price to pay for the pleasure of wallowing in self-pity.
