One would not believe that chewing a bone could be such a mediative activity, but for Osprey - when complicated matters had to be sorted out in her mind - this was the best way to focus.

News had traveled fast among the Donnelaith wolves and even those, who tended to keep to themselves, couldn't miss hearing the most important bits. Such as - a newcomer and a yearling jumping to the top of the hierarchy, when there were so many, who were deserving the honour as well. Osprey, who did not count herself in that group, because she had never had aspirations of that kind, found that her opinion about this choice was tainted with slight jealously and mistrust. She had always thought that in order to become leader's right or left hand, you had to work long and hard and prove your value. And for a newbie to achieve that kind of status so quickly? Either you had to be something exceptional or...

Frankly speaking, she did not care about the other option, because, what rebelled against Lasher's decision the most was the knowledge that Osprey - with her age and experience - would have to bow and crawl on her belly before this kid. Even though her health had prevented her from being useful to the group lately, she knew already that she would not bend her knees before the new beta. Alphas may promote, whoever they wanted, but the respect from the subordinates had to be earned. 

With this resolution, she bit hard, snapping the bone in two halves.
