Had she eaten one too many berries? God, that smell was awful. He glanced around, trying to find a place to retreat to, but the field offered little in the way of cover. There was nothing but open sky surrounding him and the wolf.

He focused back on her as she ambled forward, slowly and rickety, inquisitive though still wary. What if she was rabid? He would be done for! A soft, clear voice rang out, easing his fears slightly, though he still remained hidden, pressed against the dirt and hoping the flowers were tall enough to hide him from sight. "Are you sick?" he called back, a question tinged with both fear and curiousity.
