"The plains spread for miles and miles and miles," Nashoba said. "Game was always plentiful. The herds spent lots of time there. The sky was bigger and bluer than I've seen anywhere else. It was. . .heavenly."

She pointed her brindled nose up at the caldera, eyes surveying the landscape coolly. "This is my home now, though," she added, nary a trace of wistfulness in her tone. "This is where I belong."
