At night was when his senses were the sharpest. It was during sleep that Keelut saw the world most clearly, through the cold, the warmth, the scents and sounds, and his dreams were hard to set apart from what was real.

Black were his surroundings, full of nothing, but an ear swivels skittishly as the sound of her, she who visits him at night, cooed from afar. He can smell her, a familiar scent that no one else has scented drives him towards her, and lost in empty shadows he follows; and in the wake world his tiny paws drag him away from the warmth of her, she who keeps him alive, she who gave him life.
