shadows deepened, lengthened, as night stole over the land. the sun was but a thin strip of light in the horizon, nearly extinguished, as was the colourful sunset that had played in the sky moments ago. fog twisted through the trees, stripped of their foliage, like a living thing, spilling into the dark wood slowly but surely.
slate shadow slipped from the darker void that was his den, brilliant pale gaze searching the clearing that surounded him. something, that night, drew him, and his thoughts were of only a single thing. the caves. he had no prior knowledge of their existance, yet after the tour with his siblings his curiousity had risen like a ravenous monster. he longed to tred into the caves without the company of his siblings, to be alone with the silence and the endless mystery the caverns posed.
thus he slipped into the wood a silent shadow, eyes unblinking as he strode forward with purpose to the spot that he had met his father many days ago. he peered into the den mouth, expression blank as he stared. then he strode forward, and as gone. naught was left behind but his fading scent and a rapidly darkening sky as the boy made his way deeper and deeper within the caves.
the boy was silent as he trod onward, listening. wind, whispering as it pushed past rock and swept down passageways. water, the steady trickle of a stream, echoed dimly and faintly. still, he continued, for many minutes he did nothing but walk, and should he come to a fork in the tunnels, he selected the one less travelled. soone the cave's ceiling brushed his ears, and the passageway became steadily more narrow. yet he continued walking, until suddenly he paused, and stopped. his ear's swiveled atop his heads as a bat's might, and suddenly they pitched forward.
boom.
it echoed, thudded through the tunnel. the boy sent still, ears forward as if they were trying to fly off his head. his eyes peered through the gloom, yet nothing could be seen. he did not move, did not even dare to breath too loud. yet, his expression was devoid of fear.
