She had no idea how the witch really thought about Kjalarr — whether she claimed him just to spite Maude or harbored some feelings for the Viking — but her thoughts seemed irrelevant. She did not matter; she was merely an obstacle.
I don't know was preferable to yes, but it wasn't a no. She gritted her teeth at the thought that Kjalarr had some feelings for her — was it out of duty? Did it simply make caring for her easier? Maude looked down for a moment, contemplating whether this was the right thing to say, only to turn her head up, and make his gaze, her eyes burning intently.
