There, the aspen trees became denser still, creating a thick forrest of slender white bark jutting out from uneven snow banks. Where stubborn coniferous trees grew between its deciduous relatives, the ground was clear, although frosty, littered with a bed of pines and twigs beneath each one. It created a visual chaos; a world of unpigmented canvas interrupted by shadows, trees, and soil. Valkyrie moved deliberately, her pace unhurried as she tracked an irregular path from tree to tree. Her pale belly blended in with the snow, and if she positioned herself just right, the rest of her would dissolve into the shadows. Breathing soft and shallow, she parted her jaws and began to track the scents in the air, using the harsh, morning sun in the cloudless, azure sky as her cover.
