Steady had watched Valette leave this morning, her intent to go see how much of the bisons were left. He stayed behind a while to watch over Nikai and Keoni, but they were past the age of needing a babysitter. As much as he wanted to watch their every move, he knew he couldn't smother them like that. So, late in the morning, he set off on his own.
He ended up in the circle of stones, looking out over the meadow. Even in leu of recent events, Steady was looking forward to the future. The children were growing, and he and Valette were developing a strong bond. In his heart, he knew she had to feel the same. If not, she would distance herself at some point, wouldn't she?
He knew he just needed to come out and tell her, though it never seemed to be the right time. There was the storm, and now ice seemed to cover everything, and then the betrayal of Chaska. Would things ever calm down?
