He wanted to curse at himself for not being there, for being too weak to hold it out against Keith, and end him for his terrible timing. How long? was the only thing he felt was safe to ask. His voice was devoid of emotion, he'd hidden them along with the pain he felt for not ever being able to see her indigo eyes again. He'd cared for Meldresi in a way that he had never been able to define. Not as a lover or as a savior, but more like a master that had shown him a way to overcome his seclusion. She had freed him from oblivion, she had given him a purpose, and now she was gone.
