           With the afternoon heat beating down on the Flatlands, most of the herds are bedded down in the shade, or hiding out in the thick woodlands. She expected this, of course, but it was worth a check to see if any older members could be picked off for an easy meal. Again, she cannot help but think of Rainier. If he had not given up on her; if he had just decided to listen, they would both be well off. But she had dwelled on sentiment over the boy for too long; it was no longer worth the effort, nor time. She was two years old now, past her yearling growing pains, and it was time to really hunker down and make something of herself. Without him.
           Carolina lifts her nose, and draws her lolling tongue back into her mouth as she sniffs at the wind. She frowns. Nothing. She braces all four paws against the ground for a quick shake before cutting a sudden left and making a beeline for the lake. Her grumbling stomach can wait a few more hours.
