Perhaps it would have been wiser to shadow the elk.
As she approaches the lake, a cacophony of noise from the shore catches her attention and jerks her out of her thoughts. Her ears prick, and her nose flares as she inhales the latticework of scents; on the fringes she can smell the male and, sure enough, there he is right in plain sight. The hair on her spine stands on end for a few tense seconds, until she is able to properly take in his stance and smile. She relaxes a fraction.
Her eyes dart to the swan, then up to him. She doesn't return the nod, but she does roll her eyes and head back to the water, paws carrying her gracefully over the soft shore to stand in the shallows a few yards away from the stranger. With another cautious glance towards him, she lowers her muzzle and laps at the cool water hungrily.
