The old she-wolf took her leave of the cliffs and the treacherous terrain that went with it. She meant to return to the wolfscent she'd detected up that way, but first she wanted to see the ocean up close and personal. She'd seen the high Arctic sea but to touch those waters was death for a wolf. These shores were warm and welcoming and Ceres' expression was serene as she trotted along the river's edge toward where wave met sand.
The air was heavy and salty. Clouds mounting on the horizon promised a late afternoon storm. Ceres observed their slow movement across the sky for a long moment, then pressed onward, all the way to the shoreline. There, where the sand was permanently damp and hundreds of sand flies and other small insects made holes in the ground, she felt the sea on her paws for the very first time.
A giddy giggle tore from her lips and her tail waved gaily over her hocks as she pranced in the surf.
