Unbeknownst to Pipit, her brother had once occupied this very forest. His scent had long been washed away by many a spring storm and summer pollen, but here she was regardless. There was a sad sort of irony in this, as for a long time finding Shrike had been her only intention in life— and now, as she stood in his once-home, she found that she had given up such a dream after months and months of searching. It was time to plant her roots, with or without her beloved and brooding kin.
A shout in the warm morning drew her attention, the proverbial unintended. She was too curious to ignore it, and found herself padding through stifling thickets so that she might find the source. Pipit came from behind the tall, agouti-furred male, so she kept her distance as not to rile him. Peeking just her head from around a thick tree, she chuffed at him, expression alert and eyes full of mischief.
