There was nothing that ached more than having to watch the waterbirds fly past, knowing there was nothing she could do to catch one. Djehanne wasn't a wolf of large proportions; she'd been gifted with speed, but never strength. And what was left of her teeth, well, it didn't serve as much more than a nuisance. She licked her chops as another flew overhead, sqwuaking as if to torment her. It had been too long since her last meal, and her body was keen on letting her know.
Djehanne had become faint and dizzy, and yet still managed to maintain her balance as she lurked behind a small herd of whitetail deer. What juveniles had been born in the spring would be far too large for Djehanne to take on her own this late in the summer, so she began to scan the heads for any sign of illness.
As if by pure luck, a thinly framed buck who looked to be only a yearling himself collapsed, startling the other deer around him. One came over to the body, encouraging its weak breaths, and so Djehanne waited for the show to finish out of pure respect. Once they had cleared out, she scurried in and began to pull the corpse away, wincing every now and then as her teeth shifted against her.[/align]
