He kept north, incidentally at first, but for the past day he had been following the unique and slowly strengthening scent of the sea without knowing what the source was himself. He followed it, as curious as the killed cat, but he didn't quite make it before tiring and seeking shelter in a nearby wood.

The dusty young male crept beneath the mountain in dawning evening. The sun was slowly sinking, and though the light was not yet staved enough to present stars, there was a nearly transparent moon hanging there in the sky, and it was their to say goodnight to the diurnal, and breathe hello to the nocturnal.

Snowl found a curling tree base to excavate, and began digging a temporary den there for the long night to surpass him. It was safest curled up, hidden away, even if he couldn't sleep sometimes because of the nightmares. He had no one to protect him, and as cocky as he acted he knew he was weak. Too weak even to save his own skin, or his father's. Too weak to even properly finish a den, because he grew very lethargic after a while—a symptom of not eating—and he was not yet halfway done.

He paused for only a moment and breathed deeply. It was then that the salty scent hit him again, and he remembered what lie for him in the morning, if only he could make it through the night. And he began digging again.
