Leaf watched as the small pup opened her mouth wide to display an impressive row of teeth. Those little daggers would surely puncture any mouse--or unsuspecting paw. Deciding she would save her paw for another time, the little red wolf continued to press the mouse upon the pup. Finally, contact! She watched with unveiled delight as the pup was first fascinated, surprised, and then taken aback. The mouse had rolled onto its back and it pounded the ground with its fists, outraged that instead of a second cup of coffee, he had become a play-thing for some monstrous wolf. Catching the pup's question, Leaf glanced at the mouse, then at the pup, and back at the mouse. Timidly, she reached out with her nose to touch the mouse, and ever so slowly, she dragged her tongue across its stomach. The mouse shuddered as its finest coat became saturated with a foul wetness. He then began to tremble as he realized that this was no mere game. His life was at stake! Still, the best he could do was play dead, so he merely held his breath and hoped the two would leave him alone. The little red wolf understood this as an invitation to continue her motions and dared the pup to take her turn licking the popsicle of a mouse. Only if she was brave enough, of course. Leaf lifted her head higher as if to say that she doubted the pup's courage. Surely, she was too afraid to take this challenge! and as if to say that all truly was lost, she shrugged her shoulders as if to say, "Such things cannot be helped."
