Leaf beamed with delight. There was nothing quite as pleasurable as threatening a small pup's ego. Wondering if this was perhaps cruel of her, she thought long and hard before she realized the small pup was meeting her challenge. Holding her breath, she watched as Jokull flicked her tongue at the mouse much like a snake would. She wanted to burst out laughing. So, she did. But oh, there was a second scene. The mouse was now racing to her for refuge--he must have been scared out of his wits!--and the little red wolf entertained his grasp at hope only to watch as this hope vanished in an instant. The pup's mouth closed upon the mouse with deadly precision. The mouse squeaked once before--oh dear, he still was alive. "Sure you're strong enough to kill him?" she seemed to say as she looked at the mouse, then the pup, then at the mouse, and made a chomping motion with her teeth. She knew the pup was still some time before her true incisors, but she believed in the power of inexperience. Once more, she shrugged her shoulders, and once more she encouraged the pup's sense of ego. Maybe she really was a twisted imp of a wolf! Her moral dilemma caused her last chomp to be particularly fierce, and her teeth clanged so hard together that it caused her ears to ring. "Just like that," she said through a grin.
