Wisteria left her sleeping place in Jade Fern Grove and roamed south, and as she did, she silently counted the beats of her paws on the soft spring ground. It was over 72 000 steps from her sleeping place to the spot where she caught a vole to scarf down, and another 33 812 steps to where she spotted another wolf leaving another forest in the very far distance. Only then did she cease her strides and prick her ears.

Breccan was much too far away to recognize, and even if he was near, it was unclear if she would remember him in enough precise detail to tell who he was. His fur had always been pretty ordinary. To her this was a fat and healthy stranger leaving, presumably on a hunt, and she was quick to press her body low and tail him from afar, hoping to cash in on his spoils somehow.
