mathieu's conversation with valencia left too many unanswered questions. each one led to another, led to another, until matty's mind became so filled with the unknown that he had to actually speak each one aloud. 

he paced between his den and the border, walking in either direction at a hermit's pace. how am i supposed to ask this? matty wondered, is there even a point? because honestly, what were the chances? 

maybe i'll just, uh... just what? mathieu sucked in a sharp breath and bared his teeth, folding his brow into something between frustration and confusion. then, he made way for mal's densite, barking his presence before approaching any further.
