He was quiet while they talked. Stone couldn't make out everything they were saying and that might've worried any other wolf, but he was growing more content with the interior of the log the longer he was stuck there. It smelled awful, of course. The air was musty and growing ranker by the moment, but he trusted both the strangers in the way children often did, believing they would rescue him from this predicament.

Soon enough there was a tugging at the log, near his sides. He felt the tension shift and heard some cracks, felt them too, vibrating through the construct and in to his jutting ribs. It wasn't a pleasant experience. It would take more work than that to get him all the way out but Stone could, at the very least, take a few easier breaths - and the opening let in a clean shaft of air, which he drank in in greedy gulps.
