He snuffled over mom's face. She was sound asleep, taking a nap most likely. But Sotiris couldn't sleep. Ever since he could see, he'd been having nightmares. He didn't know what was scaring him, as he tended to forget the dream, but he often woke up in the middle of the night breathing heavily. He didn't think anyone had noticed yet, but it was bothering him and putting him off to sleep.

That's why, this sleepless night, the boy crawled out of the den for the first time. It was a warm and clear evening - he could just make out the setting sun and the stars forming on the other end of the sky, but he didn't know what they were. He looked around, then back inside the den which now appeared as a black hole instead of the home he knew.
