When the water withdrew, it did not leave much behind. Seaglass eyes swept eagerly across the damp earth, shifting between small pieces of dead seaweed and twigs. Only one thing captured her attention: the shimmer of a pearl, half-buried. The youngster scrambled forward, eager to reach for it, but another wave reached onto the shore to disturb the sand and obscure her prize.

The tide retreated once again, and the object was gone. Luli huffed a sigh, but her disappointment was quickly cast aside. The koi swung around at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, and found herself staring fearfully up at a rugged and fierce face.

"Y-yes," she answered, obedient, and averted her eyes on accidentally meeting his own for the briefest of seconds.
