It was cold. So cold it reminded him of home. It wasn't snowing, but the landscape was still white and blinding.
Amaguq strode at a steady pace, knowing well the dangers he'd face if he stopped. Furthermore, he'd been surviving out of frozen berries, and he knew he had to find something more substantial to eat very soon.
Despair made him turn his attention to the ravens he so despised. He started following them, hoping that the birds would have been luckier than him in finding a carcass.
And after one hour, his patience is rewarded! Well, sort of... There was a carcass in there, a partially eaten doe, its flesh frozen amid the bare bone. Whoever took that doe down decided that it didn't worth ending up with a numb tongue, a tired jaw, maybe even a broken tooth, for chewing flesh as hard as a rock; so he left it behind, discarded, partially hidden in the snow, handed over to whoever hungry or crazy enough to risk a bite.
Like Amaguq. And the wolverine that stands on top of the carcass, eating it voraciously. Amaguq could hear every crack made in the bone and flesh as the sound echoes around the trees.
Amaguq approached boldly, and the large mustelid readily answered him with a snarl, drool dripping from his bare teeth. The white wolf responded the same way.
Their growlings could be heard from miles away, an omen of a fight to come.
