Blunt claws ripped bark from its owner, a simple pine tree, their shavings slipping down to the crisp barren grass below. The silvery-brown wolf shadowed around the old Neverwinter forest as if a pack still ran through the pine ranks. A sigh that broke off into a low growl of discontent rippled through the male as he finished carving into the trunk. Now he slowly dubbed onwards, to where he know not, nor did care, and suddenly wanted little to do with the broken memories. It all flashed back to him in a sudden moment, and the feeling of belonging somewhere for some bigger purpose vanished.
"I'll go off and find a new pack...," he breathed in a near-inaudible tone, pausing and staring at the frostbitten pine needles blotting the clouded sky. Have you had enough? A voice pierced his mind. It was unruly and unwelcome. He shook off the condescending conscious. His pace quickened; he was headed to the mountains. His birthplace. Perhaps he would see his family again! His tail wagged at the thought.
A short time later the sun had fallen closer to the horizon. A crisp breeze swept towards him. A pair of golden-brown ears stood up from beyond a short juniper bush that blocked his vision. The scent was all too familiar. Coyote.
