Duck Lake did we drink the poison or just a placebo?

The cocoa-furred wolf lounged amid the reeds, enjoying the sunny yet unseasonably cool weather. She had awakened from a nap almost an hour ago, but there was no urgency to get up. Fortune had been  on her side earlier that morning, because she had managed to kill and eat a  mother duck with a lame wing, and several of her offspring. It had pained Hollis to slaughter the family, but she could not afford to pass on any opportunity to eat. Such was the life of a loner.

The only sounds came from the occasional duck call, or from soft splashes of the swimming birds. Hollis was therefore alarmed when an unusually loud splash issued from the lake, immediately lifting her head and looking in the direction of the noise. She was startled by what she saw - not a beaver at play or a deer quenching its thirst, but a wolf, now standing in the water with her head tucked below the surface.

Hollis hesitated. She did not want trouble, but it had been so long since she had interacted with her own kind. The woman was taller than Hollis but she was waifish, thin like herself. Neither one of them would likely benefit from a scuffle.

Hollis got up and approached the lakeside, sitting on the rocky shore with the digits of her front paws touching the softly lapping water. She emitted a loud chuff, not certain that the pale woman would be able to hear her in her current position.
