it was easy to avoid the heat of the sun, especially so when one found oneself a plot of land with ample water. the oasis served its purpose for those that lived in the lowlands — and mercedes was glad for it. not only did she find signs of prey throughout the greenbelt, but she could drink her fill of the water and even bathe for a time.
as much as she was adapted to the sand and the harsh realities of the mesa, she was a young girl, and the desire to preen and fawn over herself was quite strong. the water's surface was warm as she wade through the shallows of it, and as she came to a deep point (the water reaching her breast bone) she could breathe deeply and feel a sense of peace as the water soothed her.
her auburn fur became diaphonous and saturated, floating around her as she bobbed there, and when she ducked her head beneath the surface she became like a red smear in the blue.
