White-hot pain flashed through her skull; it was too much, all the movement and voices and the striking note of familiarity among the confusion. At first Seelie didn't move. She tried to disappear there on the ground, for all the good it did her.

Then, finally, she realized: it was him, her father, he was here and maybe that meant she would be safe. Seelie looked up, searching with tearful eyes for her mother. But she didn't see her — only an unfamiliar young man standing protectively nearby.

The girl tried to speak, to ask after her mother, but the words wouldn't come. Instead she looked to Dutch and started to cry. Fog gathered behind her eyes; eventually the tears would taper off, giving way to a distant look. Seelie still would not speak, could not — but she would let her father guide her home.
