"Simple," she repeated quietly, her lips twitching into a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She had heard that before, from others who were content in their solitude. It was an easy justification, one that gave the illusion of control, but she knew better than to let it comfort her too much. Simplicity was often a lie.

"Nothing worth having is ever simple," she added, almost to herself, her gaze flicking to the moon again. The words had slipped out before she could stop them, an old thought she'd carried for longer than she'd cared to admit.

Her ears perked slightly as she tilted her head toward him, her voice regaining its edge. "Y’var’la,” she introduced finally.
