Eventually, Peregrine rushed the deer. Their original target avoided them, but the Gamekeeper made it clear which deer the target had shifted to. Somnia charged in, her focus at first on the deer. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Peregrine lay down. Distracted, she looked at him incredulously. It then became apparent that something had happened to him. "You continue the hunt!" She practically screamed at Elwood without thinking.

Somnia went to her alpha, making sure he was still alive. She put a cold nose into his side, feeling the movements of his lungs. At least Peregrine was alive. Now she just had to figure out what had happened to him, which proved to be easy. The side of his head was bleeding, although it had to be more serious than that if it had knocked him out. Even though Somnia wasn't a healer, she knew bleeding alone didn't knock you out unless you lost a lot of blood.

The smartest thing to do would have been calling for Ashton, but alas, the thought never even occurred in Somnia's mind. There wasn't much she could think about except that Peregrine was unconscious, and that was a bad thing. A very bad thing. If he wasn't unconscious, it wouldn't be bad. So she tried to wake him up. "Helloooo? Peregrine, wake up. I don't want to be the one that our Alpha got killed by a deer." When that didn't work, Somnia started nudging him with her cold, wet nose.
