Pied had not been exactly correct in her assumption that by removing the porcupine quills from her muzzle would mean less pain later. Actually - it had got really worse, because her muzzle had swollen and had become very painful and touch sensitive. Time from time some icky stuff was oozing out of the small wounds, where quills had been. Plus, she had felt so miserable and unhappy that she found it hard to go find something to eat or go anywhere at all.
But two weeks had come and gone and on this day she felt a lot better. She had lost some weight (which was hard to notice, because of her thick fur), therefore her step was lighter than usual. She padded through the forest towards the lower parts of the pack territory - some time ago she had found a spot, where pack wolves rarely went, and hid some of the rotting sea lion meat she had brought back from her scavenger hunts down at the shore.
It was time to "fuel her body", so she could start living as she had before.
