One of the wolves — their leader, he presumed — stepped forward and asked what it was that they wanted. A scarred smirk split across his ruddy face, because that question came so unexpectedly. Perhaps a lot of things could have been avoided if they had simply done this before, but Twister doubted that their kindness went far. Still, it was an opportunity that he could not help but seize. It was not for himself, but for all of them.

"Give us food and we'll leave you alone," he said, licking at his chops. He allowed a moment for his demand to sink in. "If you refuse or try and trick us, you will find that there are more of us gathered in these woods than you." His words were confident and pointed; unspoken between the lines was the notion that he was not bluffing. Though it were just as unlikely that the full breadth of his companions were not at all close by, there was little doubt in his mind that they would come if a fight erupted. There were always scavengers.
