He leaned in cautiously with his nose mere inches from Peregrine's offspring, venturing a sniff, when all of a sudden - without his paw to distract her - the pup ripped the quiet with a startling scream. Jaws jerked his head back, his eyes widened again as they sought Peregrine, but as the pup defecated they fell to her again. Jaws simply stared, bewildered.

Somehow, the miracle of life did not seem so miraculous. Nor cute.
