At the foot of Mount Apikuni's southwest base sat a lone wolf in a thick copse of coniferous trees and underbrush, a refuge from the thick snow that had fallen before and promised to fall again soon. All around him a nebulous membrane of fog crept its wispy fingers through every crack and crevice of the dark night.
The wolf was hunched, ears splayed, ignoring the world around him as a human child hiding beneath the covers to keep the monsters away. He rocked back and forth on tense haunches, eyes glazed over, quietly repeating,
