*song is Westerwaldlied.
heute wollen wir marschier'n
einen neuen marsch probier'n
? in dem schönen westerwald
ja da pfeift der wind so kalt!
the tempo of the song matched her strides, and march she did from blazing forest south towards the hills. it was not what she wished to be doing. brunhild should have been home in rotlend preparing her daughter for the visit as ordained, instead she was here, and she had to make the most of it.
her ander was not so inclined to join in the song. he was moody, sour-faced, looking to her on occasion the way brunhild's sons often did. a roll of the eyes when she did not look attentive.
come, come! keep your spirits bright, we will find them in time. must i order that saggy look off your face?she called to him. her voice was steeped in mirth. it boomed louder than the song. the man sighed, and soon enough they were harmonizing. his own contribution a begrudging offer to keep the peace.
ohhh, du schöner westerwald--brunhild pauses and looks expectantly to the guardsman.
eukalyptusbonbon, emeric adds sullenly, without the usual enthusiasm the song entails.
the woman is pleased. she continues and lets her voice carry across the terrain, no doubt alerting anything alive of their arrival.
uber deine höhen pfeift der wind so kalt
jedoch der kleinste sonnenschein
dringt tief ins herz hinein!

I need to work out timelines so bein' vague
Warlock was doing more patrols. He didn't feel like he was actually any good at it (let's be real, if conflict happened, he'd almost certainly get pwned) but he felt he needed to make sure that things were safe. Safe-ish. Whatever. He'd look around and be ready to call for Arbiter if he had to.
But apparently whoever it was lingering around the outside of the territory today wasn't exactly being stealthy about it. He heard the voice before he spotted who it came from, squinting at a blur between the trees where the forest reached out to one of the peaks. The words were unfamiliar. Were they even words or just random sounds? Add an echo and things got a little muddled. It would be clear as he got closer, maybe.
He wasn't a wolf who sung. He did his own thing, sure, but if people were out there being that loud were they even paying attention to the fact they were coming up on someone's territory? Warlock was still quite a ways off, so couldn't tell, calling out instead,
Hello? He tried to look official as he trotted forward, trying to look confident. Did he actually look that way? Maybe. Maybe not. At heart he still felt like a child.
