He travelled west, and found himself surrounded by statuesque trees the likes of which he rarely came across in his travels. The reached higher than he could guess at, and their trunks would require many wolves stood nose to tail to encircle fully. He walked among them a mere dwarf among giants, and found that on the other side of their kingdom was the sea.

His nose flared as he breathed in the salty air, pointedly searching the breeze for traces of carrion washed ashore, but nothing caught his attention but the pungency of kelp and the ocean itself. He turned back then, and moved deeper into the forest. He cared not for the sea except for the offerings that occasionally lined its beaches.

Between the monstrous, risen roots of one tree he laid down, resting his paws for a few moments as his chartreuse eyes scanned the forest about him. No doubt, he would be visited soon, as it hardly seemed a fellow could move around these parts without bumping into another wolf.

Bazi had crossed The Tangle before sunrise. Along the way, she shed the garb her responsibility-laden everyday and dressed in the furs of her fictional self: Wilder.

The back-story had changed a few times since her run-in with Scarlett. She felt guilty pretending her children were dead, and rearranged details until she was a wandering mother seeking revenge for her murdered mate, leaving the children with a trusted aunt in the south. The wolves she sought now were the same ones that had murdered Danica, lending a little more credence to her story. Bazi only had to think of her friend's mutilated corpse to feel as Wilder must feel, in whatever universe she really existed.

She stalked through the vast coastal forest, following a faint trail that she pretended to recognize even though Rhett's scent was utterly unknown to her. So preoccupied was Bazi with her game that she paid little attention to where she was putting her feet. Long ago, before the land was protected, a poacher had set up a trap in anticipation of just such a wolf.

The fall knocked the wind out of her. When Bazi came to, she was looking at the world from the bottom of a hitherto disguised pit, surrounded by the debris that had covered it. It did not take her long enough to work out what had happened, and within moments she was overcome by blinding panic. "HELP!" the trapped wolf howled, rearing up to scratch at the earthen walls of her prison. "HEEE-EEELP!"

His ear swivelled to the sound of howling, screaming, the shrill song of someone panicked. He lifted his head, turning to face the direction of the hollering. He had managed to rest without anyone passing by, but it seemed that peace was not meant to be. He pursed his lips, and for an irritated moment considered ignoring the pleas for help and going on his way. But with a sigh, he stood and loped toward the cries.

He found a hole, and in this hole he found a female trying - and failing - to climb out. She was fine though. She just could not go anywhere. He settled his stomach, crossing his legs as he peered down at her with a stoic face. "What's in it for me if I help you out?"

A stranger's face appeared above her, black and haunting against circle of daylight above. He wasted no time in getting to the crux of the matter. Bazi snarled viciously - ineffectually - at her would-be rescuer. The vast majority of bleeding hearts around here would save her without sparing a thought for their own safety - misguided kindness that Bazi had benefited from more than once. But not this guy. She considered telling him that she would spare his life, but that didn't give him much incentive to pull her out. It was only out of sheer desperation that she was able to calm herself down enough to respond. "Well, what do you want?" she replied shakily, still standing on her back legs.

He was not known for his charitability, but nor was he known to have a complete diregard for others. "I could use a good time, if you're offering." He did not wait for her to comment on that. He disappeared from the edge of the hole to scan the surroundings. He could not reach her to pull her up, and so the solution was to find something she could climb up on. He inspected a log, but it was too far rotten and cumbersome for him to move. Fortunately, a second log, more fresher and not as large, looked to serve the purpose and it was not too far away. He dug around it to loosen it from its seat, and then shoved it with the crown of his head. Once it got moving, momentum helped to carry it and he was able to roll it rather easily.

He jumped ahead of the log and stopped it before it could tumble haphazardly into the trap. Once more, his face peered over the edge. "Got a log. Stand back." He moved to one end of the makeshift ladder, rotating the log so that it would drop on its end and form a ramp. With a final shove, down into the hole it went, just as he had hoped. The bottom end dug into the ground while the top end rolled before seating itself against one edge of the hole. "Try that."
