Her head felt as though it had split in two; the first thing she knew was agony. The next thing she became aware of was the taste of blood, tangy and metallic. It did not quench the burning of her thirst, but neither did it make her feel ill; it simply was. Her thoughts were swirling, fading in and out of darkness, and several times she held brief conversations with the Loa. She couldn't know how long she had been in this state, nor how long it took her to come out of it. Eons passed. Only seconds passed.

Her eyes finally fluttered as if opening, but daylight caused pain to lance through her skull once again. She might have yelped piteously; the sound might have died quietly in her throat. Her mind continued to swim in and out of consciousness. When her eyes fluttered the next time, it was in the cover of darkness. Still, she groaned at the moonlight, but green eyes finally opened. How long she stayed like that, her eyes open but her body motionless, was difficult to say. It was still dark, however, when she heard the tell-tale call of ravens and began to shuffle painfully to her feet.

It would be the smart thing to do, she knew, to return to Northstar Vale for healing and nourishment. Although she lived at their fringe, they were pack—she knew they would care for her. As she peered at the dried blood that had pooled where her head had been, she acknowledged that with such a wound, it would be wise. But the Loa whispered unintelligibly in her ears, and in her soul she knew that it was not yet time to return to them. She stumbled forwards, doing her best to keep her clumsy trail from being particularly obvious. She knew she did not need to hide, but something told her it would be better for them to think she had died in the avalanche. Perhaps they would not look so closely. The waif did not pause to check if she were leaving blood with each pawstep; in these hazy moments, it simply did not occur to her.

Her progress was slow and painful, but Zombie eventually left the Vale behind.
