All Welcome
Open to anyone who might keep Steph company!

Steph was lounging outside of the den, in the position she had found to be most comfortable: on her stomach, back legs tucked under her, her elbows under her chest, and her head up. It gave her the most supposed and the least pain. At least until she had to move. She hated not being able to run and play. She was young, and she had a lot of pent up energy, even when she wasn't injured. This was torture for her.

But, she felt she deserved it. She had goaded a giant beast, and gotten the horns. Literally. She was lucky she was even alive. Which is why she had not complained about her situation at all. She had kept her mouth shut, and tried to be as pleasant as she possibly could. Or, she just didn't talk at all. But, she was beginning to get bored, and she hoped someone would come around soon. She hadn't seen Murdock yet, but she thought of him often, wondering what he was up to.

Hope you don't mind what kind of company she gets!

Something strange took hold of Clary once the shock of Steph's accident wore off. A bright, nauseating feeling that clenched her throat whenever she saw her. It was frightening, confusing even, because where she knew she should have felt love and sympathy, she only felt a sickening burn.

Until now, Clary had dealt with this by simply avoiding Steph. Her sister had kept largely quiet since the incident, which made things easy. Clary had simply acted uncharacteristically quiet toward her in return. But it all felt so wrong and today the pale girl found her sister right where she always was. Clary set her jaw and slipped closer, but settled a cool distance from her, emanating tension.

Ezra had, for the most part, returned to the normal routine he had been doing before everything with the bison went down. Today he was wandering about the forest when he passed by one of the caches and, knowing that his mother stayed with Steph most of the time, decided to grab one of the rabbits from it before heading towards the den. It wasn’t much but at least he’d know they’d have something to eat for today.

Nearing the den, the rho caught sight of Clary first and gave her a questionable look before slipping past her. His tail swished happily behind him as he approached Steph and once by his sister’s side, dropped the rabbit and offered a few gentle licks to the top of his sister’s head. He briefly looked out towards Clary and wondered why she had decided to remain distant but decided that whatever her reason may be, it had to be a good one.

Steph had expected some of the adults to be cross with her for the incident with the bison. Her mother had thoroughly scolded her, Murdock had kept his distance, and she sure the others might want to at least shake their heads at her. But, she never expected her sister, of all wolves, to avoid her. Still, when she spotted Clary, her tail wagged and she smiled. But, her elation quickly turned to hurt when Clary decided to lay away from her, and didn't even say hello. The hurt was written all over Steph's face, and she turned her head before the tears began to well up in her eyes. What had she done to deserve that from Clary?

When Ezra came into view, Steph gave a small smile and returned his licks. Hey, Ezra, she greeted softly. Whatcha got there? she asked, motioning to the rabbit. She tried to hide the hurt from Clary's coolness towards her, and draw the attention elsewhere.

Clary knew very well what Steph had done, but the knowledge was only a feeling - a crumbling pain whenever she thought back to the moment she'd seen her sister torn and bleeding on the ground. She thought she had died. She thought she had lost her. For a long and sickening minute, she had wondered if she would see a new star in the sky that night; if she would have to name it; if Steph had entered the dreams mama said no wolf could wake up from.

That was why the happiness all felt so wrong, and she turned her head at Ezra's glance, not wanting his questions. He didn't even seem upset, and the soft murmur of her siblings behind her - they pushed her to the breaking. Clary tensed her jaw and tried to reign in the fire that built from a simmer to a burn. And all the while, the words began to whisper for all the reasons why.

The visible hurt of his sister did not go unnoticed and Ezra felt his chest tighten at the sight, a quiet whine escaping him while he carefully inspected her injuries. He mistakenly assumed she was in pain and was about to call for Keoni just before Steph cut away his worries with a smile. He let out a relieved sigh and gave the rabbit a nudge in his sister’s direction once she had finished asking her question.

“For you” he let out gently, the worry in his eyes settling to rest as his usual calm gaze. He glanced back out towards Clary and wondered why she still hadn’t approached. Even if he’d know the reason, Ezra wouldn’t have understood. He felt no anger or sadness in the fact that Steph had lived and didn’t bother overthinking the details of what had happened on that terrible day. She was alive and that was enough for him.

Steph tried to keep her attention on Ezra, since the only positive vibes were coming from him. Her tail wagged when he said it was for her. Help me eat it? she asked, wanting to share. Her gaze turned to Clary, and in an effort to bridge the gap that had been created between them, she added. Clary, you can have some, too, she said softly.

She waited to make a move towards the rabbit, hoping her sister would join them. Both sadness and hope filled her expression as she watched Clary for a few moments. Then she turned back to Ezra, take a breath to calm her nerves. She hated that there was this awkwardness between she and Clary. It was so weird because they had always been close. Deep down, Steph knew it was her fault, she just didn't know why.

Steph moved her head to take a bite of the rabbit, but a sharp pain in her side had her freezing, wincing  as she shifted to ease the pain. She looked sheepishly at Ezra. Can you rip a chunk off for me? she asked him.

Clary refused her sister's offer with a back still turned in silence. She hated this, she hated it all, she hated the anger, the way the nauseating heat prickled her ears and skin. She wanted things to just go back to normal, for them to pretend this never happened. But every time she looked at Steph she remembered, and the more she tried to tightly wrap her feelings, she found they only grew stronger. Things couldn't go back to normal.

The second rise of her sister's voice drove in the final thorn. Every careful measure broke, and Clary spun with a violent twist to face her siblings - to face Steph.

"I thought you died!" Clary pushed forward to confront her sister, and hoped Ezra wouldn't try to get in the way. She would never hurt her sister, and stopped herself short of pressing her nose straight into the darker girl's face. "I thought you were dead, Steph! I thought you were never coming back! I thought I would never talk to you again or run with you again or do anything with you ever again! Why did you do that!" She choked, not really knowing what she was saying, but feeling the blame as clear as a cloudless sky. Waves of anger and hurt rose to her eyes in a pooling mess, but she refused to turn her face from her sister. Let Steph see every measure of pain. Things had to go back to normal, and this was the only way Clary knew how.
