The fact that Valette's status of eligible bachelorette had changed recently did not sit well with Birk. He was jealous, but not for such trivial reasons as true and one and only love for the gray alphess, but because someone else had ascended to the throne, someone he did not know well (and now would not care much to get to know or befriend) and someone, who was not him. A little naively he had hoped for recognition for his diligent effort at the borders, for his loyalty to the group and a reward to stand next to the Queen would have been greatly appreciated. Because, though he did not love her, there was some level of sincere affection, respect and loyalty towards her.

But this was not going to happen and having hard time to cope with his sour mood and feeling too murderous to continue his patrol, receive strangers politely and civilly and not kill them or maim them on sight, he left Easthollow behind. The forest on the opposite side seemed like a very good place not to meet a single friendly and familiar face and there - hidden far from curious eyes, he settled down and began to destroy a hefty branch he had found lying around. Imagining that it was the face of his rival, gave the northerner some solace.

Knowing his former home is being claimed by someone else doesn’t quite sit well with Ukko.He doesn’t really know what he would have done anyway, should they chose somewhere else. He could have lived in the Maplewood on his own or, if brave enough, attempt a small band of wolves to sustain their lives through the upcoming months. With spring offers a new array of life and the winter’s harshness will eventually fade.

But for now, he is left alone, still, and travels south in areas relatively unfamiliar. The scent of another catches his attention and he turns to see a pale wolf on the ground, a branch between his paws, and going to town on it. Shards line the side of his muzzle and ground, as he gets closer, and he lowly chuffs in his direction so not to startle the brute.

The initially solid stick was turning into chips and splinters and with every angry bite, tear and chew, Birk felt slightly better. It was good to have such a task at hand that enabled him to see the results immediately. And for one amusing moment he thought that, if there were any praise and recognition to be given for destroying sticks, he would have just won the first place.

He did not ponder on this long, because a quiet greeting from a dark wolf, who was not too far away, reached his ears and made him look up and scrutinize the other's face for some time. Deciding that he now felt like being civil to a stranger, he got up to his feet and went over to have a better look and sniff at the man. "So - what do you want?" this did not come as politely as "how may I help you" would have, but the tone was friendly enough.
