there was something familiar about this place, a resonance deep in her bones. something in the way light filtered through the trees and the way the shadows played upon the loamy undergrowth. the heady scent of earth and ash and sea.

her logical mind said: a forest is a forest.

it said: this is nothing more than déjà vu.

sadhbh knew better. each forest was its own kingdom, its trees recording its history in their rings. each forest had its own villages of bird, rodent, reptile, insect. each forest held its own magicks and mysteries. each had its own treasure to discover. and déjà vu was nothing to brush off; it meant something.

this kingdom of trees meant something. she inhaled deeply, then settled between the thick roots of a sequoia to shelter for the night. in the morning, she would continue her exploration of the wilds, but she committed this place to memory — she would return someday, and puzzle out why this particular land made her bones sing.
