He slithered through the steep ravine, his ruddy fur a smudge against the sun scorched sands. The vultures circled overhead, but he did not fear them. Owlish eyes stole upwards. They drifted closer, their wings eclipsing light.

A hidden sun. A bloodied sky. His visions blurred, and he dipped into the sheltering shadows.

Thump.

The bird landed on the ground behind him, but Brac had already become a mirage against the cave stone.

--

Moonlight filled the den, white light spreading across the walls like a blight, like the wolves who took these lands. Brac's eyes glinted. Red rimmed, studying. A single paw hovered at the base of the cave face. Its sandstone started back, a black canvas, and he twitched his nose.

There was meaning here. He caught the images in flickers. Teeth lashing. Coyotes laughing. Minutes passed, until dawn light caught on dust motes and the reddened walls the Cavetreader had studied.

Sandstone marked with bloodied paints. Ruddy fur retreating. Hostility and anger lashed into the rock face:

A warning for wolfkind they did not deserve; a telling of the Final Dark.
