After bidding his last farwells to the beach and waving a final goodbye to the (pun intended) waved of the ocean he began to weave his way back to the forests and woods that composed the Greatbear Wilderness. But he did not stop when his paws met the solid floor he had left about a week ago. The melting carpet of white that laid at his feet was a clear telltale of the upcoming change of season, and for the Ostrega, a subtle reminder that it was time to move on from the same spot and onto new lands -- new hunting grounds at least.

But as he neared what could only be the recently claimed mountain known as Silvertip, he realized he was not the only one looking for a meal. With his ears pricking attentively and his nostrils flaring he caught sight of the smaller canine. A fox, that was digging at the snow with feverish anxiety -- enough to miss the larger predator's presence.
Perfect.

Inmediately, Ciervo's mind swung into a darker mode.
Without further ado, he began to slither towards his unsuspecting victim with his ears plastered to his skull and his tail held erect behind him like the tail of a pithon that closes in on a mouse. Soon the serpent had narrowed in on the reddish creature that a little too late realized that he was being watched and with a yap attempted, in vain, to get away from the Ostrega's grasp.
This time, death came quicker, yet no less painfully that the first time with the old fox he had slaughtered in the cold rain.

With the critter ceasing its convulsing and violent blood-coughs, Ciervo turned his attention to the small hole the fox had been digging just moments before he had been brutally attacked. Inside, barely covered by the snow laid a small body, an underdeveloped newborn that had perhaps not made it through it's first day of life.
It was then safe to assume, the fox that laid dead behind him was the parent of the unfortunate fetus.

Sad.
But not enough to move the strings of Ciervo's heart.
With nothing more than a huff, the Ostrega craned his neck to take the curled up body of the dead child between his jaws. There it lingered for only a few seconds before being chewed into mush and swallowed whole.
But that had just been the appetizer.
With his lips tainted red, he turned to the body of the unfortunate parent, the mother that would not be returning to any of her children, only the one already in his stomach.

Pura watched the whole thing with quiet interest.

After his second - technically first- murder, he had started to do his hunting further afield. The run-in with Lupa had been too close a call to repeat with someone with a keener sense of what was going on in front of them (like Dante, or heaven forbid, Blue), and Pura had ventured further away from the pack to conduct his dark business today.

He happened upon Ciervo quite by chance. The older male stalked and killed a fox upwind from where Pura was resting (and watching), and the smell of blood drew the youth nearer. He crept and tip-toed his way closer whilst the male feasted, catching the satisfying crunch of bone with cupped ears.

Before he could stop himself, Pura was too close. Favourable wind direction would no longer disguise his scent, and his breathing was too loud. He was hungry, and Ciervo's meal smelled delicious - even though it was a fox he had killed, and not a wolf.

"I also eat foxes," he announced flatly, emerging from his hiding place not twenty meters away. Well, preferably wolves, but 'I eat wolves' was not a socially appropriate greeting. The glimmer of hope Pura felt in his heart was not in any way reflected in his stare.

Again, unaware of the pair of eyes that witnessed his murder the rusty Ostrega ate without even the smallest glimmer of remorse shinning upon his visage. Where others would see fault, Ciervo's eccentric mind could only see righteousness. In a world of do or die, there were no rules to live by other than those established by the carnal desires of each creature. Eating the flesh of another canine was not a sin, it was merely a measure, a desperate to some, to keep alive.
Being a recurrent offender of the rules, there was only few that could find refuge in his overly-rational brain.
Survival of the fittest being one of them.

He had not even been able to make the first incision when the heavy scent of the young boy reached his nostrils. It had been difficult at first to notice the approaching titan under the metallic scent of blood that clogged his senses, but after his jagged breathing resounded behind him, ungracefully interrupting his meal, he had no choice but to turn to his encounter.

The titan spoke, but despite his flat, unthreatening remark, the Ostrega's natural reaction was to curl his lip over his gums to expose his bare teeth in an unspoken warning sign for him not to get any closer --unless invited. The freckled pattern that the younger, yet no less muscular, male sported woke interest in the Ostrega who had never had the pleasure of feasting his eyes on such a peculiar looking wolf.
All he had seen in his life had been solid colored, unimpressive, dull wolves.
He had been bored all his life, taking and dropping interest inconsistently with everyone and everything, but now, in the same way as the Caldera Alpha had managed at the time of their similarly morbid reunion, the young Plateau titan had grasped his attention.
Hopefully he wouldn't lose it as fast as him though.
When hungry, Ciervo was not only notoriously more impatient but also, significantly more unpredictable.

"I am not a picky eater" he barked back, his slim coyote-like ears swivelling with amusement as he tried to make out whether the boy presented a threat or just empty curiosity in those blank eyes of his. "but,I do prefer more tender meat" he added suddenly after failing to decipher the other's intentions through his eyes alone.

Pura stayed put - even he knew the meaning of bared teeth and slicked-back ears. He appreciated the simplicity of it. The wolf in front of him was obviously without pack - he had a haggard, desperate look about him that the young titan found intriguing. This wolf - he could do whatever he wanted. No pack, no rules - no code. Peregrine and Blue's authoritative voices echoed in Pura's head: we do not eat our own. We do not defile our sisters.

"I know where there are puppies," he found himself saying, inferring Ciervo's meaning. Was this a kindred spirit?

With the body of the smaller canine still splayed before his feet, with its chest cut open and the half-gnawed guts bubbling out like foam the Ostrega lashed his tongue over his nose and muzzle, attempting to clean off the stain of blood that tainted him -- but of course it was useless. Just as useless as hiding the curiosity the younger stranger piqued in him.
Still focused on his mottled coat, Ciervo allowed his decisive gold eyes to run along the flank of the titan, silently inspecting and making hypothesis on whether the boy was like him, a roamer of the night.

But as the scrutiny came to a close, the conclusion that he in fact was not a free soul settled upon the man's mind.
What a shame.
Then, with his ears tilting and his temple slightly tipping to one side he took in the boy's gruff, hard voice and the tempting invitation he laced beneath it.
Puppies? More food when he had a whole fox laying at his feet?

Naturally, the Ostrega's greed would have won the dilemma, but as a man that used reason as his compass he remained motionless for a fleeting moment, his mind weighing the options and analyzing the possible outcomes or underlying reasons for such invitation.
"Do you?" he barked simply, buying the wheels and gears in his brain a little more time to decide what to do before giving any compromising answer.

"I'm still not done with the main course, it's a bit early to speak of dessert" he then added, his eyes flickering mischeviously as he made a subtle gesture for the boy to come closer and settle.
