As in, what if I wanted to switch from Ambassador to a Toxicologist, maybe, and I'd achieved mastery in Ambassador? Is a trade something like a 'Status' and are the skills retained after changing?

You will defiantly still have the skills, it just won't show as one of your Specialties if you decide to drop it :)
