one had to pity the sheep - they'd wandered too far from the mountains.
fern ran tightly at their heels, wound tightly with adrenaline and the kind of joy that came with fulfilling one's niche. she'd done this on a smaller scale - fish, even a porcupine, once, thought that had ended poorly. herding was what her line was born and bred for, though she had no notion of her parentage. panting, she faced the ewe which had paused to square itself standoffishly in her path, the younger yearling pausing further along. she stalked nearer and barked, and the ewe broke and took off after the yearling again, veering right. she set them straight again, and called out into the territory between panting breaths, wanting someone to come to see what she'd found. she was very proud of her two sheep, and that only fueled her intense desire to herd them towards the territory's center.

Slowly, she had been settling back in to pack life. Chai knew that Kaistleoki would be a far cry from the suffocating constraints of Shadewood. Still, it took time for the young female to adapt, to fully embrace the change. She was still wary...timid. Aside from Evergreen, Liri, she really knew none of these wolves. She had seen some in passing. @Vonnaruil she had only met briefly at the borders, and @Tobi she had chatted with once. Aside from that, they were complete strangers.
With a mental wince, unseen on the surface of her face, she recalled how distant...how preoccupied everyone in Shadewood seemed. Had it been her fault because she hadn't put forth enough effort? She dismissed the question away with a shake of her head. Not this time. This time it'd be different.
Brimming with energy (partially thanks to frazzled nerves) Chai tracked down the scent of her nearest pack mate. To her surprise...they weren't alone. Mingled with it was the telltale scent of sheep. Hearing the call, she rushed forward to meet Fern, eager to help as always. Normally she would have paused to take in the wolfdog's curious appearance, but the two sheep...a ewe and a yearling, were headed for her. Swallowing, she tried to think quickly. With a bark, she fell in line beside them. Maybe she thought, if she could just sandwich them between her and Fern, they'd have a shot.

another packmate falls into line, a stranger, but her excitement will not be limited by unfamiliar faces. "I got 'em!" she shouts proudly, "sheep!" she lapses a moment and they threaten to slip away, but she increases the frantic energy with which she herds them. and sends them onward.
she understands the woman's intent suddenly - she would have been content to herd them along forever, but common sense - or maybe the wolf part of her brain - understands suddenly what there is to gain here. "ready?" she calls, and with shrill barks pushes the sheep tightly towards the other woman, heart racing.
