The passage between summer and autumn had been so subtle that were it for small incremental changes in the surroundings Esma would not have noticed it at all. Though she had come to a conclusion that seasons were more than just a shift in temperature, day-length and scenery. It was about a particular feeling in oneself as well. Gone was the weariness of body and mind from the long and hot summer days. She welcomed the misty and cool mornings cheerful and eager. Why was it so - was beyond her, for winter was not far off and with it would come the difficulties of finding food and warmth. Yet she was a creature, who lived more in the glorious present and cared not for future that had not yet come and which no one could predict.
At the moment the coast offered all she needed to thrive. There was plenty of edible morsels washed ashore, she would go for a swim, if it got too hot still. And she could spend hours on end, gazing at that invisible margin, where water met the sky and at times blended together completely. Sometimes she would hike inlands to explore, but the draw to the ocean was so strong that she would always return.
Today too Esma was there watching a number of seals that had hauled out to sleep and rest. They seemed too slow and awkward to pose a threat, yet she kept a respectful distance.
Ask before skipping. Esma was born 3/5/23
