a soft rainfall, pattering on the muddy banks of the river, drowned out the sound of the water's movement. as shallow as it was, the river had few melodies of its own to sing. the current was slow but the nutrient-rich soil blotted the water with colour, obscuring all but the minnows that flashed near the surface before diving back down into the murk. apart from the gentle ripple of motion, the grey sky's reflection was otherwise perfect. when the variegated wolf moved along the banks, his frame was hardly distorted.
he drew closer to gaze down into his own reflection. light waves caused his expression to jig, and as if in an attempt to please him, presented some semblance of a smile before the rippled moved onward, and the stoic expression returned. unmoved, haruto drifted from the water's edge, and redirected his attention to the plants that grew along the banks.
useful plants, here. he lingered among the reeds, sniffing and inspecting, as comfortable in the drizzle as a duck. water trickled down his spine, but he did not shudder. now and again, he nibbled at a leaf, scrabbled at the wet mud with a paw and chewed a root. on the opposite bank, a raccoon did the same. neither batted an eye across the riverbed, as if it presented some sort of truce, allowing them to scavenge together in peace.

Wulfwynn knew she must look crazy happily frolicking through the rain like she was, she had always heard the rain outside her kennel but had never felt its pitter patter touch before. She lifted her head to the cloudy sky, wide-eyed wonder alit in her eyes as the rain came down. The storm was a gentle one, a caress on the forest as it quelled the land's thirst.
She continued on her way through the wilderness, though, took a moment to leap into mud puddles merrily whenever the chance presented herself. Wulfwynn was on a quest, this journey of self discovery as she shaped herself into the wolf she was inside. She couldn't diddle dally, the call was impatient to get Wulfwynn on her way and so was the wildling herself.
As she meandered and explored the valley, her gaze suddenly caught a stark white form in the treeline. It was by the river nearby, she couldn't see the wolf's face but based on how taut like a string his muscles were, it must be a very intent expression. He was fiddling with the foliage at the river's bed, for what reason, Wulfwynn didn't know but it made her curious.
She padded forward, dragging her fluffy body through the wet underbrush of a thicket. Leaves, twigs and more tangled itself in her pelt but Wulfwynn hardly noticed or cared. "Hello there, river wolf! I am a friend!" Wulfwynn announced, wanting to present herself as not a threat. "I'm Wulfwynn!"

he kept one ear turned toward the raccoon that scavenged along the opposite bank, so he might know if the creature found something of interest. he doubted that it searched for herbs, though he knew little of their ways, languages and intelligence. the masked forager dug in the supple earth, turning it over and over until it unearthed a long, slimy nightcrawler. the wolf glanced over, envious, but continued on and left the raccoon’s slurping noises behind.
he flinched and crouched among the reeds when he heard paw steps approaching, hoping perhaps he might have gone unnoticed. his tracks would betray his presence, he knew- but so heavily laden with rainwater and the scent of wet earth, he thought he might have a chance at remaining undetected.
he was wrong.
the raccoon stood up, gazing toward where he assumed the approaching creature was, before it uttered a snort and retreated hastily into the tall grass. he panned his ears, noting the sound of the other creature’s paw steps- noisy, bounds and leaps and small steps. a child perhaps? but where there were children, there might also be adults.
what approached him was not…exactly a child, though her size made him do a double-take. there was indeed something very childlike about her, but it was her coat, her tail, the ridge of her brow that made her unique.
he didn’t know what she was- and immediately began to backpedal when she approached him regardless of the fact that she was brimming with friendliness.
she wasn’t a friend to him; he didn’t have any friends. lips pressed together in concern, ears flattened and tail tucked, he turned and began to trot away, glancing back with a whale-eyed expression to see if he’d need to hasten his pace- or if she’d just let him go.

Wulfwynn wondered what about her was so terrifying to these wolves, her big eyes watching the boy scurry off. She flattened her ears against her skull in dismay, Wulfwynn scampering after him with a series of yappy barking, "I won't hurt you! I just want to say hi!"
"Hey! Wait! Oof!" Her paw slipped on a patch of mud during her hurrying and she went face planting forward with a dramatic sputter. She pushed herself upright, shaking her head and wiping at her muzzle to try cleaning the muck off.
She stopped her pursuit as with his much longer legs, it was evident she had no chance in keeping stride with him anyway and well, fine! If he didn't want to be her friend, then that was his loss, Wulfwynn decided with a huffy pout. She flopped down on her rump in a moody fashion, staring down at her mud clod covered paws. Her reflection stared back at her in the muddy puddle nearby.
