Although her mistrust hurt, Keith didn't expect Cara to believe him right away. It was a heavy thing to take in, he understood, but at that moment Keith didn't want to waste time he could be using to put Cara in a safe place. He felt his impulses telling him to just take the girl and drag her away from the Spine, but he knew how much she loved the place, he knew she felt pride for her home and that she would never leave without a good reason.

"Cara look me in the eyes and please tell me if I'm lying? Why do you think I would have left the Spine? Why would you think I'd leave a place that I grew so fond of? The Spine became my home!" he stopped for a moment, staring intensely at Cara's yellow eyes with a supplicant gleam, "Why would I leave you?" he wouldn't cry even though his chest was about to implode in impotence, he needed Cara to believe him if he wanted to get his life back, and he was determined to come back to the Spine at whatever cost.
