His son didn't seem deterred by the steep incline, though Peregrine chuckled to himself when Nightjar reached the top of the hill only to flop onto his bottom. "Told you," the father rumbled affectionately, striding up to the pup and nudging him. "You're a big, strong boy, NJ," he mused, both pride and affection thick in his voice as he regarded the little prince.

As soon as he caught his breath, Nightjar jumped to his feet and roved toward one of the nearby trees. Peregrine watched in silence as the youngster pressed his face against the bark, then thrust his chubby little flank against it. The Alpha licked his lips, making a note of this behavior. Perhaps Nightjar would be interested in joining him on a patrol, where he could introduce his son to the notion of borders and the importance of keeping their boundaries marked.

"What will you be when you grow up, I wonder?" Peregrine mused, too quietly for his son to hear. He walked slowly behind Nightjar, simply shadowing the cub as he explored the copse of trees to his little heart's delight.
